About this item
The Cal-Royal CAL20 is a Grade 1 commercial cylindrical privacy lever lock from the Cal-Royal CAL Series Grade 1 platform, the value-tier institutional cylindrical line built for high-traffic privacy applications: hospital patient bathrooms, dormitory and student housing bathrooms, behavioral health residential unit bathrooms, multi-family apartment bathrooms, hotel guest bathrooms, and any commercial privacy opening that needs ANSI Grade 1 inside-locking capability with code-compliant emergency outside unlock. The CAL20 carries ANSI function F76 (privacy with emergency unlock). The latch is operated by either lever, the outside lever locks via push button on the inside lever, and the outside lever can be unlocked from outside via the slotted emergency button (using a coin or flat screwdriver), from inside by rotating the inside lever, or by closing the door. ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 certified, UL Listed for fire-rated commercial doors. Backed by Cal-Royal's full commercial warranty. SKU CAL20. ANSI F76 Privacy Function with Emergency Unlock Explained
Function code F76 is the institutional privacy function and one of the most-specified ANSI cylindrical configurations on commercial bathroom and bedroom doors. The latch is operated by rotating either lever from inside, or by rotating the outside lever only when the inside push button is out. The outside lever is locked by pushing the inside button. Crucially, the outside lever is unlocked by three different methods: rotating the outside slotted button (the emergency unlock), rotating the inside lever, or closing the door. The emergency slotted button is the safety differentiator and the reason F76 gets specified on institutional privacy applications. A staff member, parent, or first responder can insert a coin, flat screwdriver, or emergency tool into the slotted outside button to unlock the door in case of medical emergency, child entrapment, or behavioral health crisis. Without this capability, an occupant who has locked themselves in and become incapacitated cannot be reached without breaking the door. This is why every commercial code-compliant patient bathroom and residential institutional bathroom uses F76 instead of residential F19 (privacy without emergency unlock).
Why the CLUTCH Anti-Vandal System Matters
The Cal-Royal Grade 1 platform ships with the CLUTCH free-turning handle system. When the outside lever is locked and someone tries to force it by hanging body weight on the handle or twisting hard, the CLUTCH allows the handle to spin freely instead of transferring force into the chassis. That single feature eliminates the most common failure mode for commercial cylindrical privacy locks in abusive applications: snapped lever spindles and stripped chassis from forced-handle attacks on bathroom doors in dormitories, behavioral health units, and high-traffic public restrooms. Combined with the concealed mounting screws and key-removable lever architecture standard on the Cal-Royal Grade 1 platform, the CAL20 is built to survive the most abusive privacy-door applications in the institutional segment.
