Standard on fire-rated devices: sex nuts and bolts.**Strike:

Top: adjustable roller strike with positive locking plate and shims. Bottom: flush mounted.Electric Latch Retraction - MELR**The Motorized Electric Latch Retraction (MELR) exit device provides remote-controlled latch retraction that delivers quiet, smooth operation for convenient, hassle-free egress. Easily installed in new applications and available as retrofit rail kit assemblies for field updates, the MELR features maintenance-free design with few moving parts using 86% less power consumption during retraction than solenoid devices. Plus, MELR is powered by a standard power supply, simplifying installation and increasing system design flexibility.

**Electrical Specifications:

Requires 781N Controller (120VAC input, output sequencer for one or two devices). No substitutes; using other power sources voids warranty. Requires a 4-wire electrical transfer pivot or hinge. (see below)Solenoid:

**A dual retraction/holder-type solenoid. 6-9 Amp in rush @ 24VDC to 28VDC (.172 Amp holding-continuous duty.) Device bolts remain retracted for as long as the device is energized. Removal of power returns the device to the life safety, self-latching mechanical mode. Interface with central or local fire alarm system, automatic door operators, access control systems, security alarm systems, and blow open door systems.

**Functions and Trims:

Through-bolted lever, knob pull and thumbpiece trims available with wide range of functions (see below)Warranty:**Five-year limited.

About this item

Access control on a surface vertical rod exit device gives most installers one of two options: electric latch pullback via solenoid (M94), or motor electric latch retraction (MELR). The solenoid approach works, but it draws significantly more power during retraction, generates heat over continuous operation, and requires the Corbin Russwin 781N Controller for sequencing. The MELR option skips all of that. The Corbin Russwin ED5400 MELR uses a motor-driven latch retraction mechanism that consumes 86% less power during retraction than solenoid-based devices, runs on a standard power supply without a dedicated controller, and has a maintenance-free design with fewer moving parts overall. For access control integrators who are calculating amp loads across multi-door systems, that power reduction compounds fast.

This is the electrified version of the ED5400 surface vertical rod exit device, part of the Grade 1 ED5000 Series. For the full Corbin Russwin ED5000 Series lineup, browse Corbin Russwin ED5000 exit devices. For power supplies and access control components, view our electronic hardware catalog.

How MELR Works

When the access control panel sends a signal, the motor retracts both latch bolts simultaneously and holds them retracted for as long as the device remains energized. The door operates freely as though it's mechanical. When power is removed, the device returns immediately to its fail-secure mechanical self-latching mode. Both the top and bottom bolts re-engage the moment the door closes. There's no power required to maintain the latched state. Power is only consumed during the retracted hold period, which is why the MELR's 0.172 amp continuous holding current is so much lower than solenoid alternatives.

The M92 touchbar monitoring option adds a Request to Exit (REX) signal output when the pushbar is depressed. This is the signal used to shunt alarm systems, release electromagnetic door holders, or provide door monitoring integration to a central access control panel. If your installation requires REX output, specify M92 at time of order.

Corbin Russwin ED5400 MELR Technical Specifications

Fire Alarm and Access Control Integration

The ED5400 MELR interfaces directly with central or local fire alarm systems, automatic door operators, security alarm systems, and access control panels. When the fire alarm activates, the signal removes power from the MELR, the latch bolts re-engage, and the door returns to its full mechanical panic egress mode automatically. No manual reset required. This makes the ED5400 MELR the correct specification for fire-rated openings where access control and fire alarm integration are both required on the same door.

Note: MELR is not compatible with electric dogging (M97) or delayed egress (D) on the same device. If cylinder dogging is needed, specify M52. Mechanical dogging is not available on fire-rated versions.

For all compatible outside trims, browse the full exit hardware catalog.
