Spring Hinges
We stock 2-knuckle and 3-knuckle spring hinges from Stanley, Hager, Ives, and Cal-Royal in Grade 1 for self-closing applications on fire-rated and non-fire-rated doors.
Can Spring Hinges Replace a Door Closer on a Fire-Rated Door?
NFPA 80 requires fire-rated door assemblies to be self-closing. Spring hinges are an accepted self-closing device under NFPA 80 for certain fire rating categories. They're typically acceptable on 20-minute and 45-minute rated assemblies for interior doors with lower traffic. On 90-minute and 3-hour rated assemblies, which are typically required at stairwells and higher-rated fire barriers, overhead Grade 1 door closers are generally required. Check the fire rating label on the door and frame, then verify with the AHJ whether spring hinges satisfy the self-closing requirement for that specific assembly. Don't assume spring hinges qualify on every fire rating.
