About this item
Most privacy locks are cylindrical. They work fine on residential doors. But when the door is commercial grade - a hotel room, a healthcare patient room, an executive office restroom - a cylindrical privacy lock isn't the right call. The deadbolt is too short, the case is too light, and the trim attachment isn't built for daily institutional use. The Falcon MA311 is what replaces it.
It's a full Grade 1 mortise lock in the privacy function. ANSI F19. A 1-inch saw-resistant deadbolt, a two-piece stainless steel anti-friction latch, a cold-formed steel case, and a trim system that anchors to the door with through-bolted inserts rather than surface screws. The construction difference between this and a cylindrical privacy lock is substantial. For all mortise locks, browse our mortise locks catalog. For the full Falcon lineup, view our commercial locks catalog.
How the Privacy Function Works
Inside the room, the lever operates the latch normally. When someone wants privacy, they turn the inside lever slightly to throw the deadbolt. That throws the bolt and simultaneously locks the outside lever rigid. From outside the room, an emergency key retracts the deadbolt for emergency access. When the occupant is ready to leave, they turn the inside lever and both the latch and deadbolt retract together. The door opens. The deadbolt resets to retracted. No extra steps, no fumbling.
This is ANSI F19 - the privacy function for mortise locks. It's the right specification for hotel guest room doors, healthcare patient rooms, executive restrooms, spa treatment rooms, and any commercial space where momentary privacy is needed without sacrificing emergency access from the corridor.
Key Features of the Falcon MA311
The deadbolt is a full 1-inch throw in stainless steel with two 13/16-inch hardened steel free-turning rollers inside the bolt body. Those rollers spin when a saw contacts the bolt face, which is why this is called a saw-resistant deadbolt. The roller doesn't grip the saw - it turns instead of letting the blade bite.
The latch is a two-piece stainless steel mechanical anti-friction bolt with 3/4-inch projection. Anti-friction means the latch has an internal mechanism that retracts slightly when the door contacts the strike, so the latch doesn't have to be forced over the strike lip. This reduces wear on both the latch and the strike over years of daily operation.
The case is cold-formed steel, zinc dichromate plated, 0.090 inches thick. The hubs are hardened steel. The trim uses bind-resistant through-bolted inserts with 8-32 screws and thread sealant to prevent loosening over time. This isn't the same construction as a box-store privacy lock. It's built to be installed once and perform for the life of the building.
The MA311 rehands in the field without opening the mortise case. On renovation and retrofit projects where doors swing different directions, that saves real installation time. Right hand ships standard. Left hand is field-set.
Who This Lock Is Right For
The MA311 suits facilities managers and specifiers working on healthcare, hospitality, multi-family, education, and commercial office projects where ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 is required and the door schedule calls for mortise hardware. It's also the correct pick for renovation work on existing mortise-prepped doors where the goal is upgrading to a Grade 1 lock without re-routing the door edge.
Locksmiths and contractors appreciate the field-reversible handing and the IC cylinder option - existing master key programs don't need to change when the MA311 goes in.
Trim and Finish Options
The MA311 is available with four lever designs: Dane, Quantum, Sutro, and Hana. Each lever pairs with either the Gala escutcheon or the Napa escutcheon. The combination is built into the model code. DN means Dane lever with Napa escutcheon. QG means Quantum lever with Gala escutcheon. Three finishes are available: 626 Satin Chrome, 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, and 630 Satin Stainless Steel.
The Falcon MA Series uses the same lever styles and finishes across all its function codes - passage, office, classroom, storeroom, and the MA311 privacy function all pull from the same trim catalog. That's the reason facilities standardize on the MA Series. One trim system, consistent appearance across every function in the building.
Electrified Option
The MA311 is available in electrified configurations at 12 or 24 VDC. For healthcare facilities that need remote unlock capability from a nurse station, or hospitality properties integrating with a property management system, the electrified MA311 uses the same case and trim as the standard version. No separate electrified lock body to stock or specify separately.

MA311 vs. MA561 and Other MA Series Functions
The Falcon MA Series covers the full commercial mortise lock function range using the same case and trim throughout. The MA311 is the privacy function. The MA561 and other function codes in the MA Series use the same lock body, faceplate, and trim system - only the internal function changes. This matters on a hardware schedule: if you're running Dane lever with Gala escutcheon in 626 Satin Chrome across a building, every function from passage to storeroom to privacy can match without ordering different trim families.
