About this item
The Marks USA M9900 is the 36" rim panic exit device from Marks' X-it Series, a heavy-duty Grade 1 panic bar built for institutional and commercial doors in schools, universities, hospitals, and other high-traffic buildings. If you've been searching for the Marks panic bar, Marks M9900, or Marks 9900 exit device, this is the product. It's a direct rim-mounted pushbar that retrofits all popular door preps, including doors previously fitted with Von Duprin 98/99 series devices, without requiring additional door modifications.
What "Rim" Exit Device Means
A rim exit device mounts on the face of the door (the surface), as opposed to a mortise or vertical rod device that requires internal lockcase prep or surface rods running to top and bottom strikes. The M9900 rim device latches into the strike plate mounted on the door frame when the door closes. The pushbar retracts the deadlatch, allowing the door to open. Rim devices are specified on single doors and on inactive leafs of paired doors where the simpler surface-mount installation is acceptable and the door prep is standard.
Heavy-Duty Construction and the Panic Protector End Cap
The M9900 uses a heavy-duty cast aluminum chassis and a heavy-gauge extruded aluminum rail assembly with stainless steel across the top surface of the touchbar. These are not the zinc alloy or lightweight aluminum bodies found on lower-grade exit devices. The deadlatch bolt is stainless steel with a 3/4" throw and the strike is a roller strike.
The distinctive feature of the M9900 is the mitered steel flush-mounted Panic Protector end cap. End caps on standard exit devices are frequently made of zinc alloy or plastic, and they crack or break off when carts, dollies, and equipment regularly impact the end of the pushbar. Marks designed the Panic Protector end cap specifically to solve this problem. The mitered steel flush-mounted design absorbs impact without breaking, which matters on K-12 school corridors, hospital service areas, and loading dock entries where cart traffic is daily and end cap breakage on conventional panic hardware is a recurring maintenance issue.
Function Options in the M9900 Series
The standard M9900 is the rim panic exit device with hex (Allen) key dogging, available in the 36" size. The M9900F is the fire-rated version with less dogging for labeled fire doors. The M9900-48 covers 48" door widths. The 36" device fits door widths from 33" to 38". The 48" device fits door widths from 42" to 48". Both versions share the same non-handed design, meaning the same part number installed on right-hand and left-hand swinging doors without specifying handing at the time of order.
Dogging: Allen Key Standard
The M9900 includes Allen key (hex key) dogging, which allows the pushbar to be held in the retracted position for periods of free egress without requiring the pushbar to be pressed on every entry. On fire-rated doors, dogging is not permitted, which is why the M9900F less-dogging version exists for those applications.
