About this item
The Norton Rixson 195 is a 3/4-inch offset pivot set for interior and exterior doors up to 450 pounds and up to 4 feet wide. It's a jamb-attached set, meaning the pivot hardware anchors to the door frame rather than the floor slab. The bottom pivot mortises into the side jamb. The top pivot (model 180, included in the set) mounts at the head of the frame. The door weight is carried by the floor portion of the bottom pivot, which transfers the load through the jamb into the building structure.
Pivots do a different job than butt hinges. A butt hinge transfers door weight laterally into the frame face through screws in the door edge and frame face. A pivot transfers door weight vertically down through the pivot point, which allows it to carry significantly more weight. A standard commercial butt hinge set handles doors in the 200-pound range. The Rixson 195 handles doors up to 450 pounds. For oversized glass and aluminum doors, heavy solid wood doors, and large-format commercial entrance doors where conventional hinges reach their load limits, pivot hardware is the correct specification.
The 3/4-inch offset means the pivot centerline is located 3/4 inch from the face of the door toward the hinge jamb side. This gives the door its directional swing: it opens primarily in one direction (like a conventional swinging door) rather than equally in both directions as a center-hung pivot would allow. Doors must be beveled 1/8 inch in 2 inches at the door edges. The door swings 180 degrees where trim permits. For all Norton Rixson and pivot hardware, browse our builders hardware catalog.
Post-Installation Adjustment
One practical feature of the 195 is the vertical adjustment capability. After the pivot is installed and the door is hung, the position can be adjusted up to 3/16 inch (5mm) vertically without removing shimming. This allows fine-tuning of the door height relative to the threshold and head clearance after the door is in place, which is useful when a door settles slightly or when final floor finish thickness affects the required clearance.
Intermediate Pivots and Door Height
The 195 set includes the top pivot (180) and the bottom pivot. Intermediate pivots are not included but are required for taller and heavier doors. Use one intermediate pivot for doors 60 to 90 inches (5 to 7.5 feet) tall. Add another intermediate pivot for each additional 30 inches of door height. Rixson 119 or M19 intermediate pivots are recommended for the 195 system and must be ordered separately.
Fire Door Version: F195
The 195 is available for fire door assemblies up to 3-hour ratings. When specifying for a fire-rated door, specify F195 instead of the standard 195. The fire-rated version also requires an intermediate pivot by UL listing; specify FM19 (order separately). Confirm the fire rating requirement with the door assembly manufacturer before ordering.
