About this item
The Norton Rixson 6331 is the push-side, 180-degree standard-duty double lever arm operator from Norton's 6300 Series. If you've been searching "norton 6331", "6331 auto operator", "norton rixson 6300 series", or "norton 6300 operator" - the 6331 is a specific model within the 6300 platform: push-side top jamb mount, standard-duty double lever arm, with a 37-3/8-inch arm length capable of opening the door up to 180 degrees. The 6300 Series is Norton's slimmer, electromechanical-generation low energy operator platform, and the 6331 is its push-side 180-degree configuration.
6331: Why the 180-Degree Opening Matters
Most push-side low energy operators cap out at 110 to 135 degrees. That's fine for most interior doors where 90 to 110 degrees opens enough for clear passage. But vestibule entries, corridor openings adjacent to walls or casework, and openings where a door closing at 110 degrees would block clearance all need more arc. The 6331 opens the door up to 180 degrees - flat against the wall - making it the correct specification wherever the full swing is required to maintain clear passage or where the door must stay fully open and out of the way.
The 6321 is the standard push-side 6300 Series model going to 110 to 135 degrees. The 6331 is specified when the opening requires full 180-degree travel.
6300 vs 6000 Series: What Changed
The 6000 Series (6021, 6031, 6061) is Norton's electrohydraulic platform - it uses hydraulic fluid and a motor together to control the door. The 6300 Series is the newer, electromechanical platform - no hydraulic fluid, motor-driven rack and pinion mechanism. Electromechanical operation gives the 6300 its notable slim profile, which Norton describes as one of the slimmest available for a low energy operator. That slim profile is a practical advantage on frames with minimal header space and in architectural applications where a large operator body would be visually obtrusive.
The 6300 also adds features the 6000 doesn't have: an integrated LCD display for on-unit setup, a WiFi interface that connects to a mobile device for programming without connecting to the building's network, and latch boost and latch retraction - functions that help the door clear the latch on closing, useful on doors with heavy seals or slightly misaligned frames.
Push and Go, Electronic Backcheck, Obstruction Detection
When someone manually pushes the 6331, it senses the motion and continues opening the door to full-open position - Push and Go, same as 6000 Series. Electronic backcheck cushions the door speed if it's pushed open forcefully rather than letting it slam into the stop. On the closing cycle, the 6331 monitors for obstruction: the door stops and rests against the obstruction rather than repeatedly hitting it.
Backplate as Mounting Template
The 6300 Series backplate doubles as the installation template. You mount the backplate first, verify position, then attach the operator body to the plate. It reduces installation time and eliminates the separate paper template step that many operators require. Ten mounting holes and two conduit holes are indicated on the plate.
