About this item
The Sargent 42 is the 1-1/4" length option in Sargent's 40 Series conventional mortise cylinder line. The "42" number tells you the length under the cylinder head: 1-1/4" (32mm). It's machined from solid brass bar stock, ships with a No. 97 rosette and compression spring, and comes standard with the Sargent offset cam (13-0664) when ordered without hardware.
BHMA A156.5, Grade 1. An ASSA ABLOY product under the Sargent Manufacturing brand.
The 40 Series Length Chart: Picking the Right Cylinder Number
Sargent's 40 Series mortise cylinders are sized by the dimenson under the cylinder head. The number sequence maps directly to lengths:
41: 1-1/8" (29mm). 42: 1-1/4" (32mm)- this listing. 43: 1-3/8" (35mm). 44: 1-1/2" (38mm). 46: 1-3/4" (44mm). 48: 2" (51mm). 50: 2-1/4" (57mm). 52: 2-1/2" (64mm). 54: 2-3/4" (70mm).
For 7-pin cylinders, the minimum length is the 42. The 41 is only available in 6-pin configuration. If your lock hardware or security specification calls for a 7-pin Sargent mortise cylinder, start at the 42 and go up from there.
The 42 is the most commonly specified length for standard commercial mortise locksets. When a hardware specification or door schedule calls for "Sargent mortise cylinder" without specifying a length, confirm the door prep against the lock manufacturer's recommended cylinder length before ordering.
LA Keyway, Keying Options, and What "1 Bitted" Means
The LA keyway ships keyed different (KD)- each cylinder comes with its own unique key cut, two nickel silver keys included. All other keyways in the 40 Series are supplied 1 bitted, meaning every cylinder in the order is cut to a single master key combination.
Sargent mortise cylinders are available in a wide range of keyways across their key system lines. The standard LA is a conventional, unrestricted keyway. For restricted keyways that control unauthorized key duplication, Sargent offers the Degree system (DG1, DG2, DG3), Signature Series, KESO, and XC key systems- all of which are compatible with the 40 Series mortise cylinder format.
This is the connection between the 40 Series and the DG164 option code that appears in Sargent electromechanical product part numbers. When Sargent mortise locks are specified with the DG1 (Degree 1) key system, the cylinder that feeds into the lock body follows the same 40 Series sizing. The DG164 prefix references a Degree-level cylinder in a 164-function configuration- these cylinders are ordered separately for retrofit or key control upgrade situations, and the 42-length is frequently specified.
Master keying, grand master keying, and construction keying are all available. Provide keying details at time of order using Sargent Keyed Order Lead Sheets.
