Sargent 59 Electroguard: How Delayed Egress Works

The 59- prefix in the part number identifies the Sargent Electroguard self-contained delayed egress system. Delayed egress exit devices are required by code in specific occupancy types, including nursing homes, schools, shopping centers, libraries, and other facilities where monitoring unauthorized egress is a life safety and security requirement under NFPA 101 Special Locking Arrangements.

When the push rail is depressed on this exit device and held for approximately 2 seconds, the Electroguard initiates an irreversible alarm from the rail. The device then stays secure for 15 seconds, allowing personnel to respond and investigate. After the 15-second delay, the device releases for egress. The alarm sounds throughout the delay period and cannot be silenced mid-cycle by releasing the push rail. Once initiated, the alarm must be reset with a key in the rail assembly.

A nuisance delay is field adjustable to either 0 seconds (immediate alarm on depression) or 1 second (slight delay before alarm initiates). This adjustment prevents accidental alarm initiation from casual touchpad contact.

When the building fire alarm system is activated and connected to the Electroguard, a relay in the delayed action circuit voids the 15-second delay entirely, providing immediate egress for evacuation. This is the required NFPA 101 behavior for all delayed egress installations.
