About this item
The Sargent 8272 is the fail safe electromechanical function in the 8200 Series mortise lock: when the access control system applies power, both levers lock. When power is removed for any reason, including a fire alarm activation, building emergency, or power fault, both levers unlock immediately. People can enter and exit freely without keys or electronics. This is the function used for fire-rated egress doors, hospital corridor openings, government building emergency exits, and any application where local code or the AHJ requires free egress during power interruption.
This listing is the body-only configuration. The lock body includes the outside front plate, strike, and screwpack. Cylinder and trim are not included and must be ordered separately. How the 8272 Fail Safe Double Cylinder Function Works
Power ON (access control signal active): both the outside lever and inside lever lock. Entry and exit require either the access control signal to be removed, or mechanical key operation via the cylinder. Power OFF or power failure: both levers unlock automatically. The door operates freely from both sides with no key required. Mechanical key cylinders on both the outside and inside positions provide override capability at any time regardless of electrical state.
The double cylinder design means the lock body is prepped for a cylinder on both the inside and outside positions, which is appropriate for high-security applications where key control over both-direction entry and exit is required even when the electrical system is active.
This function is the electrical opposite of the 8271 (fail secure), where the outside lever stays locked when power fails. The choice between 8272 fail safe and 8271 fail secure is determined by life safety code requirements for the specific opening and must be confirmed with the Authority Having Jurisdiction before specifying. Ecoflex Technology and Field Changeability
The 8272 uses Sargent's Ecoflex technology, which reduces power consumption by up to 92% compared to continuous solenoid systems. This matters on multi-door access control projects where power supply capacity affects how many electrified devices can run on a single panel. The field-changeable design allows the same lock body to be reconfigured from fail safe (8272) to fail secure (8273) without replacing the hardware. If building use changes or code requirements change for an opening, the electrical function can be adjusted in the field without a new lock body purchase.
