Schlage L462 Double Cylinder Deadbolt: Function ANSI E06061

The L462 operates on ANSI Function E06061: key cylinder on both sides, no levers, deadbolt only. The deadbolt is thrown or retracted by key from either the exterior or interior face. This is the Schlage commercial double cylinder mortise deadbolt, and it is fundamentally different from the L460 (cylinder exterior, thumbturn interior) because the interior side requires a key for both locking and unlocking rather than a thumbturn.

Life safety notice that specifiers and facilities managers must understand: Double cylinder locks on any door in any structure used for egress are a life safety hazard in emergencies where occupants may not have a key. Schlage states this warning on every L462 product. Installation must comply with all applicable local codes, NFPA 101, and IBC egress requirements. Schlage Double Cylinder Deadbolt: Where This Gets Specified

Despite the life safety restriction on egress doors, the L462 is correctly specified on several types of openings that do not serve as required means of egress. Non-egress doors between secure and non-secure zones in institutional settings, storage and utility areas that require key control on both sides to prevent unauthorized entry from either direction, doors between secured program areas in corrections or behavioral health facilities where the interior key requirement is a deliberate security design element, and auxiliary locks on service entrances or restricted access corridors that have separate egress paths are all legitimate L462 applications.

The L462 is also the correct specification when the L460 thumbturn configuration is not acceptable because the inside thumbturn presents a manipulation vulnerability. On high-security interior doors where the interior side must be controlled the same way the exterior is, a double cylinder is the deliberate choice.
