About this item
The Schlage L464 is the cylinder-only function within Schlage's L400 Series small case mortise deadbolt line, built for commercial and institutional openings where a key-controlled deadbolt is required on one side and no interior trim is needed on the other. The deadbolt throws and retracts by key from the outside. The inside face carries no trim, no thumbturn, no lever. That combination makes the L464 the correct specification for utility rooms, restrooms, server closets, storage spaces, and small secondary doors in offices, schools, hospitals, and hotels where access must be key-controlled but interior release hardware is neither required nor appropriate.
Within the L400 Series, the L464 functions as both a primary lock on doors where no latching is required and as an auxiliary deadbolt on higher-security openings. The small case mortise chassis keeps the lock profile compact while delivering Grade 1 performance that exceeds what most cylindrical deadbolts offer at this price point.
Built construction specs that matter on a commercial door:
- 1" (25mm) throw stainless steel deadbolt with a 3/4" (19mm) stainless steel latch featuring an anti-friction tongue
- Cold-rolled steel case with zinc dichromate plating measuring 4-7/16" x 3-5/8" x 1" (113mm x 92mm x 25mm)
- Armored front at 1-1/4" x 5-19/32" x 7/32" (32mm x 142mm x 6mm) standard
- Deeper retainer groove in the cylinder shell specifically engineered to resist wrenching and pullout attempts
- Standard strike at 1-1/8" x 3-5/8" (29mm x 92mm) with dust box included; extended 1-1/4" x 4-7/8" (32mm x 124mm) option also available
- Backset: 2-3/4" (70mm) fixed
The L464 is non-handed. Handing reverses in the field without opening the lock case, which removes the lead time risk on fast-track construction projects and gives distributors the ability to hold stock without managing separate right-hand and left-hand inventories.
Door Range and Ordering
Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm). The L464 accommodates doors from 1-3/8" to 3-1/2" (35mm to 89mm) when parts are assembled to order, so specify the exact door thickness and position (EE, EI, EO, or ED) when ordering outside the standard range. A 1/8" thick lock case lead lining option is available for X-ray rooms and other spaces with radiation shielding requirements.
Cylinder and Keying Configuration
The L464 ships standard with a 6-pin mortise cylinder and two nickel silver keys. Four cylinder formats are available at checkout: standard 6-pin mortise (P), less cylinder option (L) for facilities sourcing their own cores, large format interchangeable core (J), and small format interchangeable core (BD/SFIC). Keyway choices include the C keyway, E keyway, Everest C123, and Everest C145.
Keying options at the time of order are standard, keyed alike for multi-door installations, and master keyed. Grand master keying and construction keying are also supported through American Locksets' ordering process.
Certifications and Compatibility
The Schlage L464 meets ANSI 156.5 Grade 1 and carries a UL listing. It is available with Schlage's patented 180-degree visibility indication trim, which displays occupancy status on the exterior side of the door, making it practical for restrooms and single-occupancy spaces where status visibility matters. All cylinders are backward compatible, and the L464 suites with the broader L Series family, including Von Duprin exit devices.
American Locksets has stocked the complete Schlage L400 Series, including the L460, L462, L463, L464, L480, and L496, since 2001.
