About this item
The Schlage L9092EL is the Grade 1 fail safe electrified mortise lock that facilities directors, access control integrators, and security consultants reach for when a door needs electronic control of the outside lever while keeping a mechanical cylinder override. It's part of the Schlage L909x Series, the current-generation electrified platform that replaced the L9080EL/EU. If you're specifying a new project or retrofitting a building that ran L9080 hardware, this is the direct replacement.
In EL (fail safe) mode, the outside lever is kept continuously locked by 12V or 24V DC current. When power is cut or fails, the outside lever becomes free and allows anyone to retract the latchbolt from either side. That's the correct behavior for occupied buildings where life safety codes require the door to default to accessible on power failure. If you need the opposite, fail secure operation, the L9092EU uses the same lock case and the mode is switched by flipping a physical switch inside the lock case, no tools or rewiring required.
The outside cylinder gives you manual key override at any time, whether the lock is electrically locked or unlocked. A key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt regardless of the electrical state. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, which satisfies life safety requirements on occupied commercial and institutional doors.
What Separates the L909x Series from Competing Electrified Mortise Locks
The L9092EL draws a maximum of 0.4 amps at peak and holds at just 0.01 amps in continuous operation. That holding current is low enough that a single power supply can run multiple locks on the same circuit without heat buildup. Low holding current also prevents the "hot lever" problem common in older electrified mortise locks installed in wood doors or poorly ventilated enclosures where heat trapped in the lock case degrades components over time.
Voltage auto-detection means the lock accepts both 12V and 24V DC at the same terminals. Your access control panel dictates the voltage. No jumper changes, no field configuration. The standard wiring connection uses Allegion's Molex quick-connect system. If your installation uses traditional wire splicing, the connector can be cut off without voiding the function.
The lock case is universal across 10 different functions. A single L Series lock body can be configured for 10 different door functions by changing the trim. That matters on large projects where you want a consistent lock case spec across multiple door types but different security functions on each door. The Schlage L Series supports over 55 standard functions total, with 35 lever designs, 14 finishes, and eight rose and escutcheon configurations.

Security Features of the Schlage L Series Lock Case
The L9000 case exceeds ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 security and operational standards. The deadbolt includes an anti-saw pin in the bolt that prevents cut-through attacks. A security blocking hub removes the ability to pick the lock by pulling the levers off the trim. The auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt automatically when the door is in the closed position, preventing latchbolt manipulation while the door is shut.
The forged brass and bronze levers feature a locking lever bushing on inside trim that eliminates exposed screws, a common attack and vandalism point on institutional doors. Vandlgard free-wheeling trim is an available option that allows the outside lever to spin under force without transmitting torque to the lock mechanism, protecting internal components from forced-entry attacks.
Available Optional Features (L9092EL Add-Ons)
-
RX Switch: Modular request-to-exit switch that monitors inside lever movement. The new modular design allows RX to be added after installation without opening the lock case. Useful for access control systems that need to track door opening events from the inside.
-
DPS (Door Position Switch): Monitors door open/closed status and reports to the access control system for alarm or audit purposes.
-
Latchbolt Monitor: Provides electrical signal when latchbolt is retracted, confirming actual door operation rather than just lever movement.
-
Deadbolt Monitor: Available on deadbolt functions, reports deadbolt position to the access control panel.
-
180 Degree Visibility Indicator: Visual occupancy indicator visible from a wide angle, useful on conference rooms and private offices.
-
Vandlgard: Free-wheeling outside lever that prevents forced-entry damage to internal lock components.
-
UL437 High-Security Cylinder: Specify Primus 20-500 Series cylinder for UL437 listed high-security cylinder upgrade.
-
Ligature Resistant Trim: HSLR high-risk and SL1/SK1 ligature resistant options available for behavioral health and psychiatric facility applications.
-
Anti-Microbial Coating: Available on levers for healthcare environments.

Cylinder and Keyway Options
Standard configuration includes a 6-pin C keyway mortise cylinder with two keys. The Everest C123 keyway is also available as a high-security patented option with key control. For institutional master key systems, specify interchangeable core (IC) prep with your core manufacturer. SFIC prep (less core) is also available for facilities running small format IC keying systems. Grand master keying, construction keying, and keyed alike options are available at order.
Lever Styles, Roses, and Finishes

Why Buy the Schlage L9092EL from American Locksets
American Locksets has supplied genuine OEM electrified locks and electrified mortise locks since 2001. The L9092EL is in stock and priced at a significant discount off MSRP, with same-day shipping on in-stock orders and free shipping on all orders over $300. Every Schlage lock we carry is genuine OEM from an authorized distributor.
Need the fail secure version? The Schlage L9092EU uses the same lock case as this product. Switching from EL to EU is done by flipping a switch inside the case; both modes are available on the same housing. If your door does not need a cylinder override, consider the L9090EL. For both inside and outside cylinder control, the L9094 is the correct function. Browse the full Electrified Mortise Locks range or all Electrified Locks on our site.
