About this item
The Stanley BEST 48H-7-K-626 is a single cylinder mortise deadbolt from BEST's 48H Series, now under the dormakaba brand family. If you've been searching "best 48h", "48h7", "48h", "dead bolt", "single cylinder mortise lock", or "best single cylinder deadbolt"-the 48H-7-K-626 model code reads exactly this way: 48H = the 48H Series mortise deadlock platform. 7 = 7-pin SFIC housing, less core. K = the K function, which is key retracts deadbolt from outside with thumbturn inside. 626 = US32D satin chrome finish.
The K Function: What Happens at the Door
The K function is the standard single cylinder deadbolt configuration. From outside, a key retracts and extends the deadbolt. From inside, a thumbturn retracts and extends the deadbolt. Neither side requires a key for egress. The deadbolt itself is purely a dead-locking auxiliary security device-it has no latch, no spring, and no lever. You throw it intentionally and retract it intentionally. When thrown, it extends 1 inch into the strike.
This is what distinguishes a mortise deadbolt (48H Series) from a mortise lockset (45H Series). The 45H is a complete lockset-it has a latchbolt that catches the door on closing, a knob or lever on each side, and a deadbolt. The 48H is deadbolt only. There is no latch, no lever, no automatic door retention. It's installed as a second lock on a door that already has a primary latchset, providing additional security without adding another full mortise lockset body.
If you searched "lever lock piston" trying to understand how a deadbolt mechanism moves-the deadbolt's 1-inch throw is a solid stainless steel bolt driven by the cylinder cam or thumbturn turning through the lock case. The cam rotates and pushes the bolt forward through the face of the lock case into the strike pocket. There's no piston or spring. The bolt stays in position wherever you leave it.
48H vs 45H: Deadlock vs Full Lockset
The 45H is BEST's heavy-duty mortise lockset used as the primary lock on commercial doors-it has the latchbolt, levers, and deadbolt all in one body. The 48H is a standalone mortise deadlock-bolt only, no latch, used as supplemental security above or below the primary lock. If your specification calls for a mortise deadbolt auxiliary lock in addition to the primary mortise lock, the 48H-7-K is the correct product.
7-Pin Housing and SFIC Prep
The 7 in the model code means this unit ships with a 7-pin SFIC housing, less core. The core is ordered and installed separately. BEST SFIC cores are compatible with other Best-format interchangeable core systems. The cylinder body has an internal set screw accessible only after removing the core with a control key-the set screw secures the cylinder to the lockcase, and its concealed location means the cylinder cannot be removed without a control key. "Cylinder screws" as a search term points directly to this concealed internal set screw that secures BEST mortise cylinders-it's a key specification that most pages never mention.
