What the Chexit System Does at the Door
Chexit is Von Duprin's delayed egress system. When someone pushes the exit device push bar, instead of releasing immediately, the device holds for 15 seconds while a 100dB audible alarm sounds. After the 15-second countdown, the door releases and the occupant can exit. This sequence deters unauthorized egress while still allowing exit in a genuine emergency -anyone determined to leave can wait 15 seconds.
The system is specifically designed for healthcare and institutional applications where NFPA 101 and IBC code permits delayed egress on certain non-exit doors: maternity wards where infant security is a priority, memory care units where resident wandering is a safety risk, mental health facilities, and secured institutional spaces. Code compliance requires specific occupancy type and door location -confirm with your authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) before specification.
15-Second vs 30-Second Delay: Code Requirement
The standard 15-second delay is the most common specification and meets the NFPA 101 and International Building Code requirement for delayed egress hardware. The 040086 provides this 15-second release. A 30-second release version (040088) is also available but requires written approval from the AHJ before installation -the 30-second configuration doesn't satisfy code in all jurisdictions. The 15-second version typically proceeds to approval more straightforwardly.
040086 Compatible Devices and Wire Assembly
The 040086 PCB kit is designed for Von Duprin 33/35A and 98/99 series rim and vertical rod exit devices with Chexit configuration. It's a single motherboard replacement. The 040086 PCB kit requires the Von Duprin wire assembly VON040191 -this wire assembly is sold separately and must be ordered alongside the PCB if you don't already have it. The PCB alone won't complete the installation without the corresponding wire harness.
Power Requirements for Motor-Driven Chexit
The motor-driven Chexit (post-August 2015 devices using the 040086) operates at 24VDC. It requires 1.25A inrush current and 390mA holding current. Von Duprin's PS900 series power supplies are compatible: the PS902 supports one Chexit device, the PS904 supports three, and the PS914 or PS906 supports four devices with appropriate wire gauge. No additional option cards are required with the PS900 series -the fire alarm contact connects directly into the Chexit device, not into the power supply.
Cylinder Requirement for Motor-Driven Devices
The motor-driven Chexit uses a 1-1/4-inch mortise cylinder with a straight cam. Von Duprin recommends Schlage cylinder 20-001-114. Critical installation note: the length from the bottom of the security collar to the bottom of the cam must not exceed 1-1/16 inch. Using a cylinder that's too long will prevent proper function.
Post-Fire Alarm Reset
After a fire alarm triggers the Chexit device, it does not automatically rearm when the fire alarm clears. Manual reset is required -either through the key cylinder in the Chexit device or through a connected access control system. Facilities using this device should train maintenance staff on the manual rearm procedure.
