About this item
The Von Duprin CXA99EO is the Chexit delayed egress rim exit device built on the 99 Series platform motorized blocking actuator, 15-second delay with audible alarm, immediate release on fire, 24VDC powered, self-contained control inputs and relay outputs, NFPA 101 and IBC code compliant, and ANSI A156.3 Grade 1 certified. American Locksets stocks the CXA99EO.
What Chexit Is and Why It Exists
Standard panic hardware unlocks the moment the pushpad is pressed. That's correct for most exit applications, but it creates a problem in specific facility types: behavioral health units, memory care wards, maternity departments, elder care facilities, and high-shrink retail environments. In those applications, someone pushing the pushpad either intentionally or accidentally immediately bypasses security control. Chexit solves that problem by inserting a 15-second delay between the push and the release.
When someone presses the pushpad on a Chexit device, an alarm sounds immediately and a motor-driven blocking actuator holds the door secured. After 15 seconds, the actuator releases and the door opens freely. The delay isn't long enough to trap someone in an emergency, but it is long enough to alert staff to an unauthorized or accidental exit attempt in most facility contexts.
NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code) specifically addresses this scenario under "Special Locking Arrangement," and the International Building Code governs it under "Special Egress-Control Devices." The CXA99EO is engineered to meet both standards by design, which matters for authority-having-jurisdiction approval on new construction and renovation projects.
CXA99EO Model Number Decoded
Every part of the model number tells you the configuration. "CX" is the Chexit designation for the delayed egress motor-driven blocking actuator system. "A" designates the accessible version (the CXA is the standard Chexit; earlier CX designations denoted specific configuration variants). "99" is the grooved mechanism case; the 99 Series has a grooved case; the 98 Series has a smooth case. Both are mechanically equivalent; the choice is architectural. "EO" is Exit Only, ANSI Function 01 no outside trim prep, exit only. Outside trim for the 99 EO is sold separately if needed. The fire-rated version adds "-F" to the suffix: CXA99EO-F.
How the Chexit System Works: Disarmed vs Armed
When the Chexit is disarmed either by an authorized control input or by an access control credential signal the opening operates as a standard exit device. Push the pushpad and the door opens with no delay. This is the normal business-hours state in most applications: authorized staff enter and exit normally while the delay activates only when the device is armed.
When armed, pressing the pushpad engages the motor blocking actuator and triggers the audible alarm. The door stays secured for 15 seconds. After the delay, the actuator releases and egress is available. Immediate full release occurs if the fire alarm input receives a signal the blocking actuator disengages instantly, the door releases on the next push, and the 15-second delay is bypassed entirely.
All control inputs fire alarm, inhibit, and door position switch require normally closed dry contacts. Card readers wired in series on normally closed contacts handle dual-reader applications.
Power Requirements and Power Supply Sizing
The CXA99EO runs on 24VDC. Inrush current is 1.25A at activation; holding current drops to 390mA. For system design, Von Duprin's power supply capacity limits are: one Chexit per PS902 (2A), three per PS904 (4A), four per PS906 (6A), and four per PS914 (4A). Size the power supply to the number of Chexit devices on the circuit before ordering.
Cylinders are not included and must be specified separately.
