What the Office Function Lever Lock Does
The office function is one of the most specified cylindrical lock functions in commercial buildings, and understanding exactly how it works matters before you commit to a door schedule.
Here's the full operation of the BEST 9K37B:
The latch retracts freely from inside by turning the lever -always, with no keys and no codes. The inside lever cannot be locked. From outside, the lever retracts the latch only when the inside push button is in the out (unlocked) position. Push the inside button in and the outside lever locks rigid -a key in the outside lever is now the only way to retract the latch from outside. Rotating the inside lever or turning the key from outside releases the push button and returns the outside lever to normal operation. Critically: closing the door does not release the push button. Once the button is engaged, it stays engaged until actively released from inside or by key from outside.
This is exactly right for private offices, executive suites, and any interior commercial door where the occupant needs on-demand privacy control without a separate deadbolt. One push of the inside button secures the door. Inside lever always provides immediate egress. Key outside for authorized entry.
Why the BEST 9K Is the Grade 1 Lever Lock Standard
The 9K Series has been on institutional hardware schedules at universities, hospitals, government buildings, and school districts across North America for decades. It doesn't hold that position because of branding -it holds it because of construction details that prevent the failure modes that standard Grade 1 locks can't resist.
The rose locking pin and rose assembly are engineered to resist torsion attack -the pin itself can't twist, bend, or break under forced rotation. The slotted key release cam and locking lug assembly create attack resistance at the cylinder interface specifically: even if the outside trim is damaged during a forced entry attempt, key access still works and the inside lever remains fully functional. The outside lever sleeve is a seamless one-piece hardened steel alloy construction -no seam in the locking lug area where prying attacks focus. Hub-mounted torsion spring and strong retractor springs keep the lever from sagging under years of high-cycle commercial use. Zinc hubs with a shrouded locking lug add another layer of torque resistance at the point where most leverage attacks concentrate.
Through-bolt mounting is standard and non-optional on the 9K37B -two 5/16-inch holes at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions plus the standard ANSI A115.2 door prep. That through-bolting anchors the rose assembly across the full door thickness, eliminating the leverage that surface-mounted rose screws alone can't resist.
