Bosch Security DS160I PIR Request to Exit Detector, w/Sounder, Light Gray

Model: DS160 Request-to-exitsensor, sounder For use in request-to-exit (REX) applications. Provides PIR 2.4 m x 3 m (8 ft x 10 ft) coverage, timers, door monitor with sounder alert, and pointable coverage.

The DS160 Series consists of the DS160 Detector (light gray) and the DS161 Detector (black) specifically designed for Request-to-exit (REX) applications. With features such as timers, door monitor with sounder alert, and pointable coverage, the DS160 and DS161 have the flexibility to meet the most stringent REX requirements. The exclusive Sequential Logic Input (SLI) provides added security that is not offered in any other REX device.

  • Door monitor with sounder alert.

  • Sequential Logic Input (SLI).

  • Internal vertical pointability.

  • Wrap-around coverage pattern with precise pattern control.

  • Up to 64 second adjustable latch time.

  • Selectable relay trigger mode.

  • Selectable fail safe/fail secure modes.

  • Adjustable sounder volume.

  • Activation LED.

Functions

Sequential Logic Input (SLI) The SLI terminal allows connection of a second device to require sequential detection. This eliminates the possibility that an object that is slid through the door or underneath the door will activate the detector. This input can also be used to lock the sensor if motion is present outside the premises. Door Monitor The sensor can monitor a door contact to allow special control of the internal relay. For example, if the door is opened within the relay time period, the sensor can be programmed to halt the timer. If the door is not opened within a specific time period, the relay can be programmed to deactivate. Sounder Alert An integrated sounder can be programmed to activate if the door is left open too long. The sounder volume is fully adjustable to 85 dB. Keycard Input The keycard input allows the sensor relay to be controlled from an external source, such as an access control system or card reader.

About this item

The Bosch DS160i is a passive infrared Request to Exit detector built exclusively for commercial access control applications. It is UL Listed under UL 294 as an access control device, carries ULC-S319 listing for Canadian installations, and ships in a light gray enclosure. Where generic PIR sensors stop at motion detection, the DS160i adds a built-in sounder, door monitoring, Sequential Logic Input, 15 configurable coverage patterns, and field-selectable fail mode. American Locksets stocks the DS160i at a significant discount off list price with same-day shipping and free shipping on all orders over $300.

Bosch DS160i PIR Request to Exit Detector with Sounder, Light Gray

The DS160i detects the infrared energy change that occurs when a person moves through its field of view, triggering the relay output to release a magnetic lock or signal an access control panel. Motion Analyzer II signal processing with First Step Processing (FSP) filters out false activations from HVAC airflow, temperature shifts, and electrical interference while delivering virtually instant response to human targets.

Coverage Pattern, Mounting, and Pointability

The DS160i produces a dense C-shaped coverage pattern that wraps around a doorway. At standard mounting height, base coverage is 8 feet by 10 feet (2.4m x 3m). Fifteen selectable coverage patterns are available through internal masking, allowing the field to be narrowed to a single zone, aimed at a doorknob, or adjusted for specific door configurations. Internal vertical pointability lets the detection angle be adjusted without relocating the unit.

The DS160i mounts on the wall or ceiling at heights up to 15 feet (4.6m). Orientation arrows on the base indicate correct positioning relative to the door. An optional TP160 trim plate is available for single-gang electrical box installations.

Built-In Sounder, Door Monitor, and Sequential Logic Input

The built-in sounder activates when the door is opened without a prior valid REX detection. This catches propped-door situations and unauthorized exits without requiring a separate door alarm. Sounder volume adjusts up to 85 dB. For door monitoring to work correctly, the relay latch time must be set to 16 seconds or greater.

The Sequential Logic Input (SLI) on Terminal R accepts a normally closed dry contact from any external device: a second PIR, a card reader, a photoelectric beam, or the access control panel. When the SLI input is active, the DS160i will not respond to motion. This prevents unauthorized entry through the REX zone by requiring a sequenced authorization before the detector can signal the lock to release. No other REX detector on the market offers this functionality.

Relay Output, Timer, and Fail Mode

The alarm output is two Form C relay contacts rated at 1 amp at 30V AC or DC for resistive loads. Relay latch time adjusts from approximately 0.5 seconds to 64 seconds via DIP switch. Two timer modes are available: resettable mode keeps the relay active while motion is present, non-resettable mode latches for a fixed duration. Fail-safe or fail-secure relay behavior on power loss is selectable via DIP Switch 3.

Full Technical Specifications

The DS160i ships in a high-impact ABS plastic enclosure measuring 1.80 inches x 6.75 inches x 1.75 inches (4.5cm x 17.1cm x 4.4cm) in light gray. Input voltage is 12 VAC/VDC to 30 VAC/VDC. Standby current draw is 8 mA nominal. Alarm current is 39 mA at 12 VDC. Operating temperature range is -20°F to 120°F (-29°C to 49°C), with UL-certified installations limited to 32°F to 120°F (0°C to 49°C). RFI immunity is rated at no false alarm from 26 MHz to 1000 MHz at 50 V/m. The black enclosure version is the DS161. The optional trim plate for light gray installations is the TP160.

When connecting the DS160i to inductive loads such as magnetic locks, EMF spike protection is required. UL listed magnetic locks typically include built-in protection. For locks without it, install a bridge rectifier (KBL01) or diode (1N4007) in line. The Bosch DS160i datasheet and installation instructions are available from Bosch Security Systems and can be provided on request to assist with project specification or commissioning documentation.

American Locksets stocks the DS160i alongside the electric strikes, magnetic locks, and electronic hardware that complete a full access control opening.
