About this item
When a project requires both mortise lock security and code-compliant panic egress on the same door, a standard rim exit device doesn't cut it. The Cal-Royal N-FMR9800 combines a Grade 1 mortise lock body with the 9800 Series rim push bar into one integrated assembly, fire rated to 3 hours and UL Listed for both panic hardware and fire exit applications. It's the specification for high-security institutional doors where the door prep includes an ANSI A115.1 mortise pocket and single-sided exit control is required.
This is a frequently misunderstood product category. A rim exit device uses a surface-mounted rim latch. A mortise rim exit device uses an actual mortise lock body fitted into the mortise pocket, which gives you the security of a full mortise latch and deadlatch combined with the panic egress of a push bar. For schools, hospitals, government buildings, and commercial facilities with existing mortise prep doors, the N-FMR9800 delivers both without requiring a complete door change. What Makes the N-FMR9800 Different from the Standard 9800 Rim Device?
The standard Cal-Royal A9800 is non-handed and uses a rim latch. The N-FMR9800 is handed because the mortise lock body must align with the ANSI A115.1 door prep, which is specific to the door handling. You must specify RHR (Right Hand Reverse) or LHR (Left Hand Reverse) when ordering. The device is field reversible after installation, but handing must be confirmed at time of order. If you're replacing an existing mortise rim device, match the handing to the current door prep.

Fire Rating Details
The N-FMR9800 Series covers fire exit hardware for all types of 8' x 8' double doors for up to 3-hour fire labeled installations, conforms to UL10C positive pressure standards and UBC 7-2-1997 codes. This rating applies to single doors and pairs of doors swinging in the same or opposite directions within the 8' x 8' envelope. For fire-rated applications, cylinder dogging is not available. Dogging is only permitted on non-fire-rated versions of the 9800 mortise device.
Electric Functions and Alarm Options
The N-FMR9800 supports Electric Latch Retraction (ELR) for remote access control integration and RX/LX signal switch for monitoring door use. These electrified options are compatible with the full Cal-Royal electrified exit device accessory ecosystem. For facilities running access control on fire-rated egress doors, confirm with your AHJ that the specific electrified configuration meets local fire code before specifying. An anti-microbial coating is available on the US32D satin stainless finish. Order using part number ANTB-EXIT.
Compatible Trim Functions
The N-FMR9800 ships in exit-only configuration. Outside trim is ordered separately and determines the entry function. Available functions through Cal-Royal exit device trims include entrance (key locks and unlocks outside lever), passage (lever always free), storeroom (lever always rigid, key entry only), and dummy (pull only). Specify trim function at time in order to match your security requirement for the outside of the door.
Where Is the N-FMR9800 Specified?
Common applications include schools with mortise-prepped fire exit doors, hospitals, government buildings, universities, and commercial facilities where the fire egress door already has a mortise pocket and a panic push bar is required by code. It's also specified when a building's existing panic hardware is being upgraded and the door prep already accommodates the 9800 mortise configuration.
