About this item
Privacy locks get specified constantly and misunderstood just as often. A privacy function is not a keyed lock. There's no cylinder on the outside, no key required, and no master key override. It's designed for restrooms, locker rooms, fitting rooms, hotel rooms, and single-occupancy offices where the occupant needs to lock out the outside from inside, and staff need a way in during emergencies without calling a locksmith. The Cal-Royal SG20 handles both cleanly. It's a Grade 2 Challenger Series cylindrical lever lock, ANSI Function F76, with an inside turn button and emergency outside access via a small tool or coin through the access hole in the outside trim.

How ANSI Function F76 Works
From the inside, rotating the turn button locks the outside lever. The outside lever becomes completely rigid. Turning the inside lever at any time retracts the latchbolt and simultaneously releases the outside lever, so exiting the space automatically unlocks the door in a single motion. There is no way to leave the outside lever locked while walking out from inside. From the outside, the only entry method during a locked condition is inserting a small flat tool or coin into the access hole on the outside trim and rotating. This retracts the latchbolt without a key, which is the emergency access that building code requires on privacy functions. There's no cylinder and no key override on the SG20.
This is the function distinction that separates F76 from F109 (entrance, where a key unlocks the outside) and from F86 (storeroom, where the outside lever is always rigid). Privacy is keyless on both sides. Entry from outside in an emergency uses the access tool only.

Where the SG20 Gets Specified
This lock is the correct specification for single-occupancy restrooms, employee locker rooms, hotel guest rooms, medical exam rooms, retail fitting rooms, and private offices where occupants require temporary lockout capability. It's also common on dormitory individual room doors where keyless privacy during occupancy is required alongside a separate keyed cylindrical lock on the same door.
For facilities managing multiple restroom or privacy doors on a master key system, the SG20 is not the right choice since it has no cylinder for keying. The correct product for keyed privacy with master key capability is a privacy mortise lock or an interconnected lockset with a keyed privacy function.
