What Is a Double Thumbturn Deadbolt and Who Needs It

A double thumbturn deadbolt, also called a double sided thumbturn deadbolt or non-keyed double deadbolt, has a thumbturn on both the exterior and interior faces. Neither side accepts a key. The deadbolt is thrown or retracted by hand from either side. There is no cylinder and no way to lock or unlock with a key from either side.

This function is specified on doors where both occupants on either side need to be able to operate the deadbolt independently without a key. Storm shelter doors are one of the most common applications listed in the Falcon D251 catalog. Safe rooms, interior security rooms with two-way access control requirements, and residential shelter-in-place applications where no key should be required from either side all represent D251 use cases. The D251 is also specified on doors between connected suites or rooms where the occupants on each side need deadbolt control without key management.

The bolt automatically deadlocks when fully thrown, which means it cannot be pushed back with a shim or credit card from either side once engaged.
