About this item
The PDQ 93170 is a manual flush bolt designed specifically for the inactive leaf of hollow metal double door assemblies. On any pair of commercial doors, one leaf is active (where the lockset or exit device is mounted) and one leaf is inactive. The inactive leaf needs to be secured to the frame at the top and bottom so it stays fixed when the active door latches against it. The 93170 does exactly that: it installs into the edge of the inactive hollow metal leaf and sends a rod to a strike at the head or sill to pin the door in the closed position.
This is the correct series for hollow metal doors. PDQ makes separate flush bolt lines for wood doors with different door edge preparations. The 93170 is built to the hollow metal standard, which is why it's compatible with ANSI/BHMA 156.115 door and frame prep.
What ANSI Type L04251 Means
ANSI/BHMA A156.16 covers closers and flush bolts. Type L04251 is the specific function code for manual flush bolts. When a hardware schedule calls for "manual flush bolt, ANSI Type L04251," the PDQ 93170 satisfies that specification. It's UL/CUL listed for metal swing doors up to 4 feet by 8 feet with a 3-hour fire rating, and it meets the Buy American Act requirements for government and federally funded projects.
Key Specifications
Slide bolt throw: 3/4". Backset: 3/4". Rod length: 12 inches, measured center of face to bolt end when retracted. The slide bolt is 1-1/2" adjustable, which provides some flexibility during installation if the door is not perfectly plumb or the frame prep dimensions are slightly off. The face plate is 1" x 6-3/4". Strike dimensions are 15/16" x 2-1/4". Guide is 1" x 2".
Base material is brass and steel. Sixteen #8 x 3/4" flat-head combination screws are included for installation into hollow metal door edges.
The PDQ 909 Dust Proof Strike
The 93170 is specified with the PDQ #909 Dust Proof Strike for the bottom (floor) installation. Standard strikes at the floor collect dirt, dust, and debris over time, which causes the bolt to bind or fail to seat completely. The 909 Dust Proof Strike uses a cover mechanism to keep the strike pocket clear between door cycles. It's ordered separately and should be included in any project spec when the bolt is used at the floor.
For applications where the rod needs to extend past 12 inches (taller doors, oversize openings), the PDQ 93170E Series 24-inch extension rod is available as a separate order.
Finishes Available
605 Bright Brass (US3), 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), 626 Satin Chrome (US26D). All three finishes are available on the same hardware body and compatible with matching trim on coordinating inactive leaf hardware.
When to Specify the 93170 vs Automatic Flush Bolts
Manual flush bolts require a deliberate hand action to extend and retract the bolt. The occupant has to manually push the rod before the door can be opened. Automatic flush bolts retract when the active leaf is opened and re-engage when it closes, requiring no manual operation. The 93170 manual version is the right choice when the inactive leaf stays closed for extended periods, the application doesn't require frequent independent opening of the inactive leaf, and the specification calls for a simpler, lower-cost hardware solution.
