About this item
The RCI 8380-32D is the GateMag-Rutherford Controls' purpose-built electromagnetic lock for interior and exterior perimeter gates in brushed stainless steel (US32D finish). It's not a standard door maglock that happens to mount on a gate. It was designed from the ground up for gate applications: weather-resistant housing, long wire cable for wiring runs to electrical boxes, built-in conduit fitting, and a holding force of up to 1,500 lbs (680 kg). American Locksets stock the 8380-32D. Free shipping on orders over $300.
Why Electromagnetic Locks Work on Gates
Standard door hardware-strikes, bolts, latches-depends on a door frame that lines up precisely and a door that swings or slides on a predictable path. Gates flex. They rack in the wind. They sag over time. Hinges wear. The gap between gate and post changes with every load cycle and every season.
Electromagnetic maglocks don't need a precise strike alignment to hold. The electromagnet in the body energizes when the armature plate contacts the face. As long as the armature makes contact, you get the full holding force. Misalignment tolerance is built into the design-there's no latch that needs to catch, no bolt that needs to extend into a hole. That's why maglocks are the correct technology choice for perimeter gates, tool cages, fences, and storage areas where mechanical hardware alignment is difficult to maintain.
What the 8380-32D Does That Standard Maglocks Don't
Most standard electromagnetic locks are designed for interior commercial doors-aluminum or wood frames, controlled indoor environments, wiring chases in walls and ceilings. Put one of those on an exterior gate and you'll fight corrosion, moisture intrusion, inadequate wire length, and a housing that wasn't built for outdoor UV and temperature swings.
The GateMag solves every one of those problems specifically. The housing is solid stainless steel with weather-resistant construction, rated for operating temperatures from -14°F to 140°F (-10°C to 60°C). The wire cable is 6.5 feet (1.9 meters) long-enough to reach the electrical box or controller at a gate post without splicing. The built-in conduit fitting (1/2-inch inside diameter, 3/4-inch outside diameter) lets you run conduit directly into the lock housing for clean, code-compliant wiring. No external conduit adapters needed. No exposed wire runs along the gate post.
Remote Lock Status: Know Whether Your Gate Is Locked
Every RCI 8380-32D includes a built-in Remote Lock Status (RLS) reed switch. The RLS indicates in real time whether the electromagnet is engaged (locked) or not engaged (unlocked). The reed contacts handle max 0.20A at 12VDC or 0.12A at 24VDC-enough to run a signal back to an access control panel, a monitoring relay, or a status indicator light. Four wires total: two for power input, two for the RLS contact output.
In a perimeter security context, RLS matters. A gate that should be locked after hours but isn't-because the armature plate wasn't seated or power was interrupted-is a security gap. The RLS closes that gap by giving the monitoring system a confirmation signal, not just a "power on" indication. The GateMag knows the difference between the magnet being energized and the magnet actually holding the armature.

Gate Applications
The 8380-32D is specified for single and double swinging gates, exterior and interior sliding gates, tool cages, chain-link fences with gate frames, storage yard gates, and any perimeter access point where a mechanical lock is impractical. The versatile face-mount or bottom through-bolt mounting means it adapts to round post gate frames and flat-surface gate frames without special brackets on most installations.
RCI recommends using a filtered, regulated DC power supply from their 10 Series line to protect the GateMag and maintain consistent holding force. The MOV surge protection built into the lock handles typical inductive surge from the coil itself, but a regulated supply prevents voltage variation from reducing holding force on gate posts where voltage drop over long wire runs is a concern.
American Locksets has stocked RCI electromagnetic hardware since 2001.
