About this item
The Von Duprin CXA98EO-F is a fire-rated delayed egress rim exit device from Von Duprin's 98 series with the Chexit (CX) assembly. If you've been searching "von duprin chexit", "chexit device", "cx98", or "von duprin chexit panic bars" - this is the product. CXA tells you the configuration: CX = Chexit delayed egress assembly, A = motor-driven blocking actuator (post-August 2015 generation). The 98 is the smooth mechanism case from the 98/99 series. The EO is exit only. The F designates the fire-rated version.
What Chexit Delayed Egress Does at the Door
When someone pushes the panic bar, the door doesn't open immediately. The Chexit assembly holds the door for 15 seconds while sounding a 100dB audible alarm. After 15 seconds, the door releases and egress is possible. The delay is designed to deter casual or unauthorized use of a door that isn't meant for routine pedestrian traffic, while still allowing exit when someone genuinely needs to leave.
One thing that matters from a code standpoint: the Chexit is not just a delay timer with an alarm. It's a "Special Locking Arrangement" device that meets the specific requirements of NFPA 101 Life Safety Code and IBC "Special Egress-Control Devices." Code only allows delayed egress on specific occupancy types and specific door locations. An AHJ letter may be required before installation, particularly for delays beyond 15 seconds.
The device releases immediately - no delay - when a connected fire alarm activates. That's the key requirement for fire-rated applications and NFPA compliance. The CXA98EO-F carries this immediate fire release capability in a fire-rated housing.
CXA98EO-F vs CXA98EO: What the Fire Rating Changes
The F suffix designates fire-rated exit hardware. The fire-rated version meets UL10C and UBC 7-2 requirements for use on fire-labeled door assemblies. The non-fire CXA98EO doesn't carry those listings. If your door has a fire rating label - which is common on stairwell doors, corridor doors, and exit access doors in healthcare and institutional buildings - the CXA98EO-F is the only compliant option.
Fire-rated exit devices also cannot be dogged. The CXA98EO-F ships less dogging - the device always latches when the door closes.
Self-Contained Control System
All control inputs and outputs are self-contained inside the Chexit assembly - no separate control panel needed. The assembly includes connections for the fire alarm input (normally closed contact), a door position switch input, an inhibit input, an alarm relay output (for remote alarm monitoring), and a secure relay output (for remote monitoring of the lock state). With card readers, the normally closed contacts of readers on both sides wire in series into the Chexit. The standard 6-inch by 20-inch door decal ("PUSH UNTIL ALARM SOUNDS. DOOR CAN BE OPENED IN 15 SECONDS") ships with every unit.
Power Supply Requirements
The CXA98EO-F (motor-driven) operates at 24VDC. Inrush current is 1.25A. Holding current is 390mA. Power supply sizing from Von Duprin: PS902 handles 1 Chexit device. PS904 handles 3. PS906 and PS914 each handle 4 devices. Cylinder is not furnished - specify separately when ordering.
