About this item
The Schlage ND40S RHO OS-OCC is the bath and bedroom privacy lever set from the ND Series with the OS-OCC exterior indicator trim, which displays VACANT or OCCUPIED on the outside of the door depending on whether the inside push button is engaged. It combines the proven ANSI Function F76 privacy lock with a 180-degree visibility escutcheon indicator that tells anyone approaching the door whether the room is in use, without requiring them to knock or try the handle.
This lock is specified on single-occupancy restrooms, accessible restrooms, nursing home patient rooms, exam rooms, behavioral health rooms, hotel bathrooms, and any other commercial application where the room's occupancy status needs to be visible from the corridor.
How the ND40S Privacy Function Works
The ND40S operates on ANSI Function F76. In the unlocked state, either lever retracts the latch freely. Pressing the push button on the inside lever locks the outside lever, preventing entry. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress regardless of button state. The outside lever is released in three ways: rotating the inside lever, closing the door (which releases the button automatically to prevent lockout), or inserting an emergency release tool, which can be a small flat screwdriver or the Schlage emergency key, into the recessed slot in the outside lever.
That automatic door-closing release is important. On a standard push-button privacy lock, a door left ajar with the button engaged can lock out the next occupant. The ND40S releases the button when the door closes, eliminating that scenario entirely.
What the OS-OCC Indicator Adds
The OS-OCC exterior escutcheon displays OCCUPIED when the inside button is engaged and VACANT when the door is unlocked. The indicator window runs the full width of the escutcheon at a height of 0.6 inches, which Schlage specifically sized to maximize visibility at corridor reading distance. This is especially relevant on ADA-accessible single-user restrooms where the International Building Code and ADA standards require that occupancy be communicated without physical contact with the door hardware.
The OS-OCC indicator fits the standard 1-3/4" door preparation without additional door work. Spacer kits allow installation on thinner doors from 1-3/8" to 1-11/16".
ND Series Performance Specs
The ND Series significantly exceeds ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Grade 1 requirements. Abusive lever torque resistance is minimum 3,100 inch-pounds, which is more than 2.5 times the Grade 1 standard. Offset lever pull resistance reaches 1,600 pounds. Real-world cycle testing puts the ND at 16 million cycles with nearly zero lever droop. The lock is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1, UL 10C fire rated for 3-hour single doors to 4'-0" x 10'-0" and pair doors to 8'-0" x 8'-0" with the 3/4" latch option, ADA compliant, Florida Building Code and Miami-Dade hurricane rated, and BAA compliant for federal procurement.
The Rhodes Lever
The RHO (Rhodes) lever returns to within 1/2" (13mm) of the door face, which satisfies California Title 19 Fire Code, ICC A117.1 accessibility requirements, and ADA lever compliance. It's a clean straight commercial lever that's one of the most widely specified in the ND line. An optional break-away feature is available on the Rhodes lever for most locking functions, allowing the handheld portion to separate from the shank under extreme forced-entry torque to protect the locking mechanism.
