About this item
The Schlage ND40S-SPA is the Bath/Bedroom Privacy function (ANSI F76) within the Schlage ND Series Grade 1 commercial cylindrical lever lineup, configured with the Sparta lever design. Push-button locking from the inside lever, inside lever always free to retract the latch for immediate egress (no lockout risk), closing the door automatically releases the push button. Outside lever is made inoperative when locked, with emergency unlocking via a small flat-blade screwdriver inserted into the recessed slot on the outside lever. Non-keyed (no cylinder on either side), non-handed, 2-3/4" backset standard, 1/2" steel latch throw, fits standard ANSI 161 door prep. Meets and significantly exceeds ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 requirements. Tested to 3 million operating cycles (3x ANSI spec) with 16 million cycle durability life.
About Schlage and the ND Series
Walter Schlage invented the modern cylindrical lock in 1920, and the Schlage Lock Company has been the US market's most-specified commercial cylindrical lock brand ever since. Schlage is now part of Allegion (same parent as Von Duprin, LCN, Falcon, and Schlage Electronics). The ND Series is Schlage's flagship Grade 1 commercial cylindrical lever lock lineup, positioned as the most comprehensive Grade 1 cylindrical in North America with 31 mechanical functions, 9 lever designs, 2 rose options, and a full suite of electrified, electronic, and mechanical variants. Common applications include healthcare facilities (hospitals, clinics, medical offices), education (K-12 schools, colleges, universities), government buildings, office towers, retail spaces, hotels, and any commercial opening where Grade 1 cycling durability matters. For the full Schlage lever lock lineup including ND Series variants, see Schlage Lever Locks, or browse the complete Schlage ND Series Grade 1 catalog.
ND40S Model Decode and F76 Privacy Function
Schlage's ND naming packs series, function, and lever into a compact code:
-
ND = ND Series Grade 1 cylindrical lever
-
40 = Function code for Bath/Bedroom Privacy (ANSI F76)
-
S = Standard privacy variant (versus indicator trim versions like ND40S-OS-OCC which add Vacant/Occupied exterior indicator)
-
SPA = Sparta lever design (at URL level, this page is the Sparta configuration specifically)
F76 Privacy is the right function for private residential-style bathrooms and bedrooms in commercial applications. Push the button on the inside lever to lock the outside lever. Anyone inside can always retract the latch by simply rotating the inside lever — no exceptions, no lockout mode, instant egress. Closing the door automatically releases the push button, which prevents accidental lockouts where someone closes the door without unlocking first. From outside, if someone is stuck or the room needs to be accessed in an emergency, a small flat-blade screwdriver (or Schlage's dedicated emergency key, sold separately) inserted into the recessed slot on the outside lever releases the button. This is the specification of choice for single-occupant restrooms, private offices that double as quiet rooms, breastfeeding rooms, examination rooms, changing rooms, and resident bedrooms in healthcare/senior-living facilities.
Other ND Series function codes you may see in a door schedule: ND10S Passage F75 (no locking), ND25D Exit F86 (exit only with cylinder), ND40S Privacy F76 (this product), ND50PD Entrance F109 (office function), ND53PD Entrance F110, ND70PD Classroom F84, ND75PD Classroom Security F88, ND80PD Storeroom F86, ND82PD Institutional F87, and ND96PD Storeroom F86 Closet. For the Sparta lever specifically across all ND functions, see the Sparta (SPA) lever family page.

When to Specify the ND40S-SPA
This configuration is the right spec when three conditions are met: (1) the door needs privacy-function locking with inside button and outside emergency release, (2) the project requires Grade 1 commercial cycling durability (not Grade 2 residential), and (3) the Sparta lever is specified on the architectural hardware schedule. If the architect hasn't specified a lever design yet, the Sparta is a clean contemporary aluminum-look lever popular in modern commercial and institutional projects. For Colonial styling, specify the Rhodes (RHO) lever. For curved traditional styling, the Athens (ATH). For tubular modern, the TLR. For budget-conscious Grade 2 privacy applications, step down to the Schlage AL Series instead of the ND. For indicator-trim versions showing Vacant/Occupied on the outside (common in single-occupant public restrooms), specify ND40S-SPA-OS-OCC.
