About this item
The Schlage ND80BD SPA is a Grade 1 storeroom cylindrical lever lock from Schlage's ND Series Sparta lever, SFIC small format interchangeable core prep (less core), storeroom function ANSI F86, outside lever always rigid, entrance by key only from outside, inside lever always free, UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and tested to near-zero droop after 16 million operational cycles. American Locksets stocks the ND80BD SPA in seven finishes.
What the ND80BD SPA Model Number Means
"ND" is Schlage's heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lock series, the toughest cylindrical lock Schlage makes. "80" is the storeroom function code, ANSI F86: outside lever rigid, entrance by key only, inside lever always free for egress. "BD" is the SFIC (Small Format Interchangeable Core) prep designation the lock ships less core, prepped to accept SFIC cores from Best and equivalent manufacturers. "SPA" is the Sparta lever design.
Knowing the BD vs PD vs JD distinction before ordering matters. ND80PD SPA is the same storeroom lock with a conventional 6-pin Everest 29 cylinder included. ND80JD SPA is the FSIC (full size/large format interchangeable core) prep version. The ND80BD SPA is specifically for facilities already running a Best-compatible SFIC key system that need to drop in their own cores.
Storeroom Function: How the ND80BD Operates
The storeroom function is the maximum security position in the ND Series cylindrical lock lineup. The outside lever is rigid at all times; it does not turn whether the door is locked or not. There is no push button, no thumb turn, no way to unlock the outside lever without a key in the cylinder. Present a valid key from outside and the lever retracts the latch. Remove the key and the outside lever immediately returns to the locked, rigid state. From inside, the lever always retracts the latch freely, no key, no code, no action required for egress.
This is the specification for server rooms, pharmacy dispensaries, supply closets, controlled inventory areas, and any commercial opening where constant, automatic, keyless lockout on the outside is required without any manual re-locking step.
SFIC Prep: What Less Core Means for Your Order
"Less core" means the ND80BD SPA ships without a cylinder core installed. The SFIC housing is machined into the lock and ready to accept a small format interchangeable core, but the core itself must be supplied separately. This is intentional; it lets your facility drop the ND80BD SPA directly into your existing Best-compatible SFIC key system using your own cores already on your building's master key plan.
SFIC cores are field-removable with a control key in seconds, enabling rapid rekeying across the building without disassembling a single lock. This is the primary reason institutional buildings, schools, universities, hospitals, and government facilities specify SFIC prep on their ND Series hardware schedules. Core changes happen when personnel turn over or keys are compromised, not on a scheduled locksmith visit.
Note: the ND80BD SPA accepts Best SFIC and equivalent formats. It does not accept FSIC (large format) cores that would be the ND80JD SPA. Confirm your existing core format before ordering.
ND Series Grade 1 Performance Numbers
The ND80BD SPA carries the same mechanical platform as all ND Series locks. These are the actual test results, not marketing claims: 3,100 in-lb of abusive locked lever torque with no entry that's more than 2.5 times the ANSI Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull resistance up to 1,600 lbs against pry bar attacks. Near-zero droop or wobble after 16 million operational cycles. Tested to at least 3 times the 1 million-cycle ANSI Grade 1 minimum.
The Sparta lever returns to within 1/2 inch of the door face, complying with California Administrative Code Title 19 and Title 24 (California fire code), which governs lever return dimensions for fire-rated door applications.
