What QEL Means and Why It Matters

QEL stands for Quiet Electric Latch Retraction. This is Von Duprin's motorized latch retraction system, and it operates fundamentally differently from the standard EL (Electric Latch Retraction) option. Standard EL uses a high-power continuous-duty solenoid that produces an audible mechanical snap when actuated. The QEL uses a precision motor to pull the pushbar in electronically, which dramatically reduces the noise signature of both the retraction event and the dogging state.

Von Duprin specifically lists hospitals, libraries, museums, and theaters as the primary applications for QEL, and for good reason. In patient care areas, quiet areas, or performance spaces, the mechanical clack of a solenoid-actuated exit device every time a door is released is disruptive. The QEL resolves this at both the activation moment and in the sustained dogged state.

How QEL Electric Latch Retraction Works

The QEL integrates with access control systems, credential readers, and building automation through a 24VDC signal. When a valid credential is presented at a reader on the outside, the access control panel sends a signal to the QEL, which retracts the latch momentarily, allowing push-pull operation from outside. The pushbar continues to function mechanically at all times regardless of power or system state. Mechanical egress is never dependent on electrical power.

The QEL can also be configured for extended latch retraction, which holds the device unlatched for a set period. This is a clean alternative to mechanical dogging on controlled openings where access patterns change throughout the day. Both momentary and extended modes are activated by the same 24VDC signal from the control panel or automation system.

Electrical load is 1.0A inrush for 0.5 seconds and 0.14A in holding. It runs on a standard 2-amp power supply, which allows longer wire runs from the power source compared to higher-draw EL solenoid options. UL approved for Class II circuit applications. Power supply and power transfer are sold separately.

Surface Vertical Rod Configuration

The 9827 and 9927 are surface-mounted vertical rod (SVR) devices. The latch engagement is accomplished by vertical steel rods running along the surface of the door to top and bottom strikes, rather than a rim latch or concealed rods inside the door. SVR configuration is used on hollow metal and wood doors where concealed vertical rod installation is not possible or not specified. Rods are 1/2" square tubing. Standard rods accommodate doors up to 7' (2134mm) tall. Extension rods in 3' (914mm) sections are available for taller doors. One-piece top rods are available for 8' and 10' door heights.

Device centerline mounts at 39-5/8" (1006mm) from finished floor. The 3' device size covers doors from 2'4" to 3' wide. The 4' device covers 2'10" to 4' wide.

Exit Only Function

The EO designation means there is no outside trim. The door operates from inside by pushbar only. Outside access requires a separate trim set ordered independently. The device is field reversible.
