About this item
The Precision 2303 is a wide stile mortise exit device from PHI's Apex 2000 series, configured for the key-retracts-latchbolt function. PHI stands for Precision Hardware Inc, now part of the dormakaba/BEST Access Systems group. If you've been searching "phi precision", "pph2303", or "2303" for this product this is the correct listing. The 2303 function designation tells you the outside trim operation: a key in the outside trim retracts the latchbolt, allowing entry. The push bar on the inside provides egress at all times. Outside trim is sold separately this listing is for the device body only, prepped for the key-retracts-latchbolt trim configuration.
The 2300 Mortise Series vs the 2100 Rim Series
The 2303 is from the 2300 mortise exit device family not the 2100 rim series. Mortise devices engage both the top latch and the mortise lock case simultaneously when the push bar is pressed, providing a more secure single-point latch at the lock case height. Rim devices mount to the door surface and latch at one point through a surface-applied strike. If your project specifies a mortise exit device (doors prepped for mortise lock installations), the 2300 series is the correct configuration. If your opening uses a rim-type device, you'd be looking at Precision's 2100 series instead.
Function Code 03: What Happens at the Door
The function number in the 2303 model code is 03. That's the key-retracts-latchbolt configuration sometimes called storeroom function in the context of mortise exit devices. From outside, pressing the touchbar doesn't open the door. A key in the outside cylinder retracts the latch for entry. Without a valid key, outside access isn't possible through the device trim. From inside, the push bar works as a standard panic bar no key needed, immediate egress.
Other function options in the 2300 series for comparison: 2301 is exit only with no outside trim. 2302 is exit only with dummy trim prep. 2305 key controls thumbpiece. 2308 key controls lever or knob. 2314 is passage function with lever always active. The 2303 specifically handles applications where access control through a keyed cylinder is required on a mortised exit opening.
Construction and Materials
The covers, touchbar, device channel, lock-side and hinge-side fillers, and end cap are heavy wrought brass, bronze, or stainless steel. The chassis is investment cast steel, zinc dichromated for corrosion resistance. The latchbolt is stainless steel with a 3/4-inch throw and anti-friction tip. The S982 handed curved lip strike ships standard with the device.
Dogging is hex key, 1/4-turn standard on the non-fire version. The 2303 can be specified with cylinder dogging as the 2303CD variant. Fire exit hardware (FL2303) does not include dogging fire-rated devices must latch every time.
The device covers ANSI A115.2 (Type 161 door prep), A115.18 cylinder lock prep, and A115.1 (Type 86 mortise lock prep) which means it retrofits into standard mortise door preparations without additional door modification.
