About this item
The Schlage ND12D with the Rhodes lever is the non-keyed exit lock from the ND Series, Schlage’s strongest and best-selling cylindrical lock line. If you’ve been searching for a Schlage ND12, the Rhodes lever style, or a heavy-duty exit lock for a school, hospital, government building, or commercial space, this model is a great fit.
It’s designed for simplicity and reliability—there’s no key cylinder and no external locking mechanism to manage. Both levers operate freely at all times, so the latch retracts smoothly from either side with a simple push or pull. This makes it ideal for high-traffic areas where safe, consistent, and hassle-free exit access is essential.
It's built for high-traffic interior and exterior egress doors where unrestricted passage in both directions is the correct specification.
How the ND12D Exit Function Works
The ND12 is a lever-by-lever configuration. The lever on the outside and the lever on the inside both operate the latch freely and continuously. This is the right function for any door where access control is not required but the door still needs to latch securely every time it closes. Common applications include corridors, stairwells, gymnasium entries, loading dock access points, and any opening on a fire-rated path where egress must be immediate and unrestricted from both sides.
What Separates the ND Series from Everything Else
The Schlage ND Series significantly exceeds ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Grade 1 requirements. The standards require 1 million cycles. The ND is tested to 3 million cycles at certification, and real-world performance reaches 16 million cycles with nearly zero lever droop or wobble. That's not a rounding difference. That's the gap between a lock that lasts a decade and one that lasts several decades in a hallway that sees 400 pushes a day.
Abusive lever torque resistance is minimum 3,100 inch-pounds without gaining access, which is more than 2.5 times the Grade 1 standard. Offset lever pull resistance is minimum 1,600 foot-pounds. These numbers matter on institutional doors where forced entry attempts and vandalism are real risks. The Schlage ND doesn't just meet the standard, it's engineered well past it.
The Rhodes Lever
The Rhodes (RHO) is a clean, straight commercial lever with a return to within 1/2" (13mm) of the door face. That return dimension makes it compliant with California Title 19 / California Fire Code requirements, ICC A117.1 Accessible and Usable Buildings standards, and ADA lever accessibility requirements. On any door that needs to meet accessibility codes, the Rhodes lever's geometry works. Levers are pressure cast zinc, plated to match finish selection, and field reversible.
Door Prep, Latch, and Strike
Door thickness range is 1-5/8" to 2-1/8" standard, with optional configurations from 1-3/8" up to 6" thick. Standard backset is 2-3/4". A 3-3/4" backset is also available. Latch bolt is steel with a 1/2" throw, deadlocking on keyed and exterior functions. A 3/4" anti-friction latch is available for fire door pair applications. Standard faceplate is 1-1/8" x 2-1/4". Standard strike is ANSI curved lip 1-1/4" x 4-7/8" x 1-3/16" lip to center.
