Falcon MA Series Grade 1 Mortise Locks: Full Function Coverage

No other mortise lock line in the mid-price Grade 1 category covers the same breadth of functions the MA Series does. From non-keyed passage and privacy functions through keyed entrance, storeroom, classroom, dormitory, hotel, asylum, and electrified fail safe/fail secure, the MA Series handles a complete commercial door schedule from a single manufacturer, a single warranty, and a single key system. Specifying one brand across all functions on a project eliminates interoperability concerns, simplifies the submittal package, and reduces the number of supplier relationships the hardware contractor needs to manage on site.

Non-Keyed Functions

The MA101 Passage, MA12 Single Dummy Trim, MA18 Double Dummy Trim, MA161 Connecting Room/Exit, MA301 Privacy, MA311 Privacy Bedroom/Bath, and MA321 Privacy cover interior and non-access-controlled openings. These functions give specifiers the same MA Series Grade 1 hardware body on interior doors as on keyed perimeter and security doors, which maintains visual consistency across the building and eliminates the hardware downgrade that often happens on interior openings when different manufacturers are used for different function types.

Keyed Commercial Functions

The MA521 Entry/Office, MA541 Entry/Office, MA551 Holdback, MA561 Classroom, MA571 Dormitory/Exit, MA581 Storeroom, MA621 Apartment Corridor, MA641 Dormitory, MA371 Store Door, MA381 Apartment Exit, MA411 Asylum, MA431 Classroom Security with Deadbolt, MA441 Classroom Security, MA451 Hotel Guest, and MA531 Apartment Corridor Door cover the full spectrum of keyed commercial door applications. The classroom security functions with deadbolt (MA431) and without (MA441) are particularly relevant for K-12 and higher education projects specifying intruder-resistant lockdown functions that meet current school security guidelines.

Electrified Functions

The MA851 Fail Safe and MA881 Fail Secure electrified storeroom functions bring access control integration to the MA Series using the same lock body and trim as the mechanical functions. Both operate on 12V or 24V DC, field-selectable. The MA851 unlocks when power is interrupted, for stair tower and fire alarm integrated doors. The MA881 stays locked when power is interrupted, for perimeter security and server room doors. RX switch variants (MA851RX and MA881RX) add a request-to-exit switch for access control panel integration and valid exit logging.

MA Series Core Specifications

The MA Series lock case is cold-formed steel, zinc dichromate plated, 0.090 inch thick. Optional lead wrapping is available for radiation-shielded environments. Hubs are hardened steel. Backset is 2-3/4 inch only. Door thickness is 1-3/4 inch to 1-7/8 inch standard. The latchbolt is two-piece stainless steel with a 3/4 inch projection, anti-friction, and field reversible. The deadbolt is 1 inch throw, stainless steel, with two 13/16 inch diameter hardened steel free-turning saw-resistant rollers. The armored front is 1-1/4 inch x 8 inch, brass or stainless steel, adjustable for door bevel, reinforced by heavy-gauge steel with stabilizing ribs. The strike is brass or stainless steel, ANSI A115.1, non-handed.

The spindle is an independent breakaway design, rated to release at a maximum of 480 in./lbs. This breakaway specification prevents forced rotation of the lever from transferring damaging torque to the lock chassis, which protects the lock body on high-traffic and high-abuse institutional openings without requiring a freewheeling trim option. Trim is through-bolted with 8-32 screws and thread sealant to prevent loosening under repeated use. All trim is cast, forged, or wrought, with individual heavy-duty springs per lever for reliable return across high cycle counts.

Cylinder options include conventional 5-pin, 6-pin, or 7-pin with Falcon G keyway standard, Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC) with A keyway standard, and other keyways available. The SFIC option allows the cylinder core to be removed and replaced using a control key without disassembling the lock, which is the correct specification for properties managing rekeying on a large number of doors. Split finishes are available when inside and outside require different finishes. Available finishes include US3 Polished Brass, US4 Satin Brass, US10B Oil Rubbed Bronze, US15 Satin Nickel, US19 Flat Black, US26 Polished Chrome, US26D Satin Chrome, US32D Satin Stainless, US11E Aged Bronze, and others.

Why the Falcon MA Series Belongs on Your Hardware Schedule

The Falcon MA Series is the correct specification when a project requires confirmed ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 Operational and Security certification across every function on the door schedule, UL 3-hour fire door listings, UL 10B and UL 10C positive pressure compliance, and the option for SFIC interchangeable core keying, without paying premium mortise lock pricing for functions that don't need it. The Falcon MA Lock Case is also available separately for projects that need the chassis without a complete trim package.
