Falcon T381 Grade 1 Classroom Security Cylindrical Lock

The Falcon T381 is the classroom security lock in the T Series Grade 1 cylindrical line. The function is ANSI F88, and the distinction from a standard classroom lock matters significantly in how the door is secured during a lockdown.

On a standard classroom lock (ANSI F84), the outside lever is locked and unlocked by a key from the corridor. A teacher who needs to secure the classroom during an active threat has to open the classroom door, step into the corridor, use a key to lock the outside lever, and retreat back inside. That brief exposure to the corridor is the problem ANSI F88 is designed to eliminate.

On the T381 (ANSI F88), the outside lever is locked and unlocked by a key from inside the classroom. The teacher stays inside, turns the inside key cylinder, and the outside lever locks immediately. No door opening required. No corridor exposure. Outside, an authorized key still retracts the latch for staff entry. But the outside key cannot control the lockout state. T381 vs T561: Classroom Security vs Standard Classroom

Both the T381 and T561 are classroom locks. Both prevent unauthorized corridor entry when locked. The functional difference is who controls the locked state.

On the T561 (ANSI F84 Standard Classroom), a key from the corridor controls the outside lever. The door must be opened and the key used from outside to lock it. This is adequate for standard after-hours room security but creates the corridor exposure problem during emergency lockdowns.

On the T381 (ANSI F88 Classroom Security), the inside key controls the outside lever. The classroom locks from inside without opening the door. For K-12, higher education, and any institutional facility specifying for intruder scenarios, the T381 is the correct specification. Confirm the function requirement with the facility's security consultant or AHJ before substituting T561 for T381 on a hardware schedule.
