Falcon T561 Grade 1 Classroom Cylindrical Lock

The Falcon T561 is the standard classroom function in the T Series Grade 1 cylindrical lock line. The function is ANSI F84: the outside lever is locked and unlocked by a key inserted directly into the outside lever from the corridor side of the door. When a staff member turns the key in the outside lever, the outside lever locks. No one in the corridor can push it down to enter the classroom. When the same key is turned the other direction, the outside lever unlocks and returns to normal passage. Inside lever is always free for immediate egress at any time regardless of the outside lever state.

This is how the classroom lock has worked in schools for decades. The teacher or administrator approaches the corridor side of the door, inserts a key into the outside lever cylinder, turns it, and the classroom is secured. This is ANSI F84. F84 vs F88: Standard Classroom vs Classroom Security

Both the T561 (ANSI F84) and the T381 (ANSI F88 Classroom Security) are classroom locks in the T Series. The distinction matters significantly on current school security specifications.

The T561 (F84) requires the staff member to use a key from the corridor side. The teacher must open the classroom door, step into the corridor, turn the key to lock, and return inside. On a building with standard classroom function hardware, securing a classroom during an active threat requires corridor exposure.

The T381 (F88) puts the key cylinder on the inside trim. The teacher stays inside the classroom, turns the inside key, and the outside lever locks without opening the door. No corridor exposure required.

On new school construction and renovation projects where the specification committee has reviewed lockdown protocols, ANSI F88 (T381) is increasingly the required function. Confirm the required function with the facility's security consultant or AHJ. Existing schools that have not yet upgraded may still be running ANSI F84 hardware throughout, making the T561 the correct replacement specification for like-for-like swap-outs on those buildings.

SFIC Option for K-12 and Institutional Master Key Programs

The T561BD is the BEST SFIC Less Core variant of the T561. For schools running a BEST-compatible Small Format Interchangeable Core master key program, the T561BD allows every classroom door to participate in the same IC program as every other lock in the building.
