About this item
The Accentra 7160 is the concealed vertical rod (CVR) exit device from Yale's 7000 Series, sized for the 36-inch bar covering 30 to 36-inch door widths. If you searched "yale 7160", "al 7160", "7160", or "yale exit devices" - this is the product. Accentra is the current brand name for Yale commercial hardware under ASSA ABLOY. The 7160 model number, rod system, and strike specifications carry forward directly from the Yale catalog.
The Critical Difference Between the 7160 and 7120: Wood Doors
This is the specification detail that every competing product page for both devices misses entirely. The 7120 and 7160 are both concealed vertical rod devices from the 7000 Series, and they look nearly identical in photos. The difference is door material compatibility.
The 7120 CVR is rated for metal doors only - specifically hollow metal doors with internal stile pockets designed to accept vertical rod hardware. The rod system and top strike on the 7120 are designed around the geometry of hollow metal door stiles.
The 7160 CVR is rated for both wood and metal doors. This is the version to specify when the door is a stile-and-rail wood door, a wood-clad door, or any door type that is not hollow metal. The 7160 uses a mortised 761 top strike rather than the roller 791 surface-mounted strike used on the 7120. The mortised strike seats into a routed pocket in the wood door frame head - the correct installation for wood frame construction. The 7120's roller strike is designed for hollow metal frame construction.
Specifying the wrong CVR model for the door type creates an installation problem at the frame head that requires field modification. Confirm door and frame construction before ordering - metal door and metal frame gets the 7120, wood door or wood frame gets the 7160.
AL 7160: Distributor Catalog Reference Format
If you searched "al 7160" - the AL prefix appears in commercial hardware distributor and dealer catalog systems as an internal product category code prepended to the base model number. This format appears in some dealer databases used by commercial hardware distributors, similar to the DL and LV prefix formats seen on cylinder products in the same catalog systems. All AL 7160 references in distributor platforms point to the Accentra 7160 CVR exit device described on this page.
Yale Exit Devices: Where the 7160 Fits in the 7000 Series
If you searched "yale exit devices" - the 7000 Series is Accentra/Yale's Grade 1 architectural exit device platform. The 7160 is one of five body types in this series, and it holds a specific position:
7100F - rim device, pullman latch, surface-mounted, single-point latching, metal/wood/composite
7150F - rim device, SquareBolt patented square bolt, surface-mounted, single-point latching, metal/wood/composite
7110F - surface vertical rod, rods on door surface, one or two-point latching, metal/wood
7160F - concealed vertical rod, rods inside door stile, two-point latching, wood and metal. This listing.
7120F - concealed vertical rod, rods inside door stile, two-point latching, metal only
7130F - mortise body, for mortise-prepped doors
The 7160 is the CVR specification for any opening requiring concealed hardware and two-point latching where the door is wood or where wood frame heads require a mortised top strike.
Two-Point Latching: What the 7160 Does at Top and Bottom
The 7160 latches at two points - the door frame head at top and the floor or threshold at bottom. The top latchbolt is a 3/4-inch pullman-type with automatic deadlatching that extends into the mortised 761 frame head strike when the door closes. The bottom bolt is a 5/8-inch deadbolt held retracted during the door swing arc, extending when the door reaches the closed position to engage the flush-mounted 790 floor strike. For threshold openings, the optional 794 floor strike accommodates the threshold height difference.
The telescoping concealed rod system connects the crossbar mechanism to both the top and bottom latches. The rods run inside the door stile - invisible from both faces of the door. This two-point latch design provides significantly more resistance to forced entry than a single-point rim device because the door is secured at both the head and floor, not just at the latch bolt strike on the jamb.
Handed: How to Order Correctly
The 7160 is handed - unlike rim exit devices which are non-handed, the CVR device requires you to specify door hand at the time of order. The device is field reversible but must be specified handed correctly. Hand is determined from the outside (push) face of the door: if the hinges are on the right when looking at the push face, it is right-hand. If the hinges are on the left, it is left-hand. This is the most common ordering error on CVR products - confirm door hand before placing the order.
Door Height Options and Less Bottom Rod
The standard 7160 adjusts to 8 feet of door height (244cm), with the device centerline set at 39-15/16 inches from the floor. For taller openings, specify the height suffix at order: suffix -9 for 9-foot doors, -10 for 10-foot doors. The 7160F fire-rated version is also available for fire-rated door applications requiring a concealed rod CVR device on wood or metal doors.
The Less Bottom Rod (LBR) option is available for the 7160 where a floor strike cannot be used. The LBR configuration uses a thermal pin at the top frame head to provide the second latch point above the door centerline rather than at the floor. Specify LBR when floor strike installation is not possible at the opening.
Fire Rating and Trim Compatibility
The 7160F fire-rated version is UL/cUL listed under GXHX/GXHX7 as fire exit hardware. Fire rating for paired door applications: 8-by-10-foot pairs at 1-1/2 hours, 8-by-8-foot pairs at 3 hours. Machine screws and wood door fasteners are standard for panic hardware. Sex nuts and bolts are standard for fire exit hardware. Trim is sold separately and compatible from the 620F escutcheon series, 630F pull/thumbpiece series, 680F offset pull series, and 540F rose series.
