Manual vs. Automatic Flush Bolts: Which One Should You Specify?
Manual flush bolts require the user to manually retract the top and bottom bolts before they can open the inactive leaf of a paired door. Most users don't know to do this, which means the inactive leaf frequently stays latched when it should open, causing doors to bind and hardware to wear prematurely. Automatic flush bolts retract automatically when the active leaf is opened: a mechanism connected to the active leaf contact edge releases the bolts as the active leaf swings open. Automatic flush bolts eliminate the user-operated step entirely. They're the specification for most commercial paired door openings because they don't rely on user knowledge or compliance to function correctly.
How Door Coordinators Work with Flush Bolts
On a paired door with both leaves on overhead closers, the coordinator prevents the active leaf from closing before the inactive leaf has fully latched. Without a coordinator, the active leaf often closes first and its latch can't engage the strike because the inactive leaf is still swinging and blocking the strike face. The coordinator arm holds the active leaf open until the inactive leaf's flush bolts extend and the leaf is fully latched. Install the coordinator arm on the active leaf header and adjust the arm length so the active leaf can only close after the inactive leaf latches.
