How to Size an Access Control Power Supply in Three Steps 

 

Step one: list every device the power supply will power and its current draw in milliamps at the operating voltage. Typical draws: standard electric strike (fail-safe, energized) 250 to 500mA at 12VDC, electromagnetic lock 300 to 600mA at 12VDC, electrified lock solenoid 500 to 900mA at 12VDC, PIR REX sensor 50mA. Step two: add all current draws together. Step three: multiply by 1.25 for the 25 percent safety margin. The result is the minimum power supply rating you need. Don't go below it. Undersized power supplies cause voltage drop at the loads, which leads to intermittent lock failures that are extremely difficult to diagnose in the field.

 

Does Your Fail-Safe Installation Need Battery Backup? 

 

If you specify a fail-safe electric strike or maglock, the lock releases when power is cut. Without battery backup, a tripped breaker or utility power interruption simultaneously releases every fail-safe lock on that circuit. For most access-controlled commercial installations, this creates an unacceptable security or operational condition. Securitron BPS-12/24, SDC 632RF, and Alarm Controls PS12/24 series all include automatic battery charging, low-battery supervision, and seamless switchover to battery during power interruptions. Specify battery-backed power supplies on any fail-safe installation where simultaneous lock release during a power interruption is unacceptable.
